Somalia and World Bank Forge Deeper Development Partnership Amidst Economic Reforms

Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has signalled a significant strengthening of its development partnership with the World Bank Group. The move underscores Somalia’s strategic intent to leverage international financial support for its economic and social advancement.
The engagement, which took place on July 22, 2026, saw Deputy Minister Ali Mohamed Omar (Ali Balcad) and Permanent Secretary Hamza Aden Xaadow meet with the World Bank Country Director for Somalia, Hideki Matsunaga, and his delegation. The discussions centred on enhancing cooperation to align with Somalia’s key development priorities.
This high-level dialogue, as reported by Shabelle Media Network, focused on actionable strategies to bolster collaboration between Somali government institutions and the World Bank. Key areas of discussion included fostering regional integration and advancing the practice of economic diplomacy, critical components for attracting investment and facilitating trade.
Officials from both sides expressed a mutual commitment to deepening the existing relationship. The overarching objective is to drive economic growth, stimulate development initiatives, and ultimately improve the prosperity of the Somali people. For legal and business professionals, this signifies a potential increase in development-funded projects, requiring careful navigation of regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements.
The meeting is a clear indication of Somalia’s proactive approach to engaging with international financial institutions. By cultivating these relationships, the Federal Government aims to secure vital support for its burgeoning economy and essential social services. This strategic alignment is crucial for investors and corporate entities looking to participate in Somalia’s evolving business landscape, offering opportunities for growth while demanding a thorough understanding of the nation’s legal and economic trajectory.
