Tornadoes Are Reported in Kentucky as Storms Sweep Across the U.S.

Emergency officials in Kentucky were digging through the damage after reported tornadoes as a sprawling weather system delivered a violent combination of heavy rain, flash flooding and strong winds all the way to New England.

North of Bowling Green, Ky., at least 12 residential structures were damaged just before 5 p.m., said Blake Schroerlucke, deputy director of Grayson County Emergency Management. Three people were evacuated and two were injured, he said.

The storm blew the roofs off some buildings, downed power lines and toppled trees onto buildings and streets, Mr. Schroerlucke said. The damage was concentrated in a small area near Clarkson, home to many lakeside vacation properties that are currently empty, he added.

By 6:30 p.m., the weather had calmed and the storm had “moved out completely,” Mr. Schroerlucke said.

“We’re catching the tail end of the clouds and a little bit of rain,” he added.

One part of the system reached far into New England and prompted flash flood alerts and a tornado watch around New York City, its first since 2021.

A line of storms broke away from the larger system and moved farther south in the central part of the country across southern Illinois, Kentucky and Virginia.

All afternoon and into the evening, brief tornado warnings flashed through that region, including at least one that the National Weather Service had noted with a special “particularly dangerous situation” designation.

The storms over Kentucky were moving into West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland, where a flash flood warning was issued in Baltimore.

In May 2025, during an outbreak in the central United States, a strong tornado carved a 16-mile path of destruction through Laurel County, Ky., in the southeastern part of the state, tearing homes into shreds and killing several people.
