UK evacuates humanitarian worker from DR Congo after potential Ebola exposure

The United Kingdom has medically evacuated a humanitarian worker from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to London after a potential healthcare-related exposure to Ebola.

“The precautionary evacuation was arranged by the UK government in collaboration with the National Health Service, the DRC government and international health partners,” a Tuesday release on the UK Home Office website obtained by our correspondent disclosed this.

The individual, a UK resident working with a humanitarian organisation supporting the Ebola outbreak response in the DRC, is not displaying any symptoms and remains well, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) on Tuesday.

The person was flown to the UK on a flight chartered solely for the evacuation and is now being assessed and monitored in isolation by infectious disease specialists at a London hospital.

“The incubation period of Ebola ranges from 2 to 21 days and the individual will be closely monitored and required to isolate throughout this period,” UKHSA said in a news story published on Tuesday.

The agency said there are currently no confirmed cases of Ebola in the UK and stressed that the risk to the general public remains low.

Richard Pebody, Director of Epidemic and Emerging Infections at UKHSA, said: “The risk to the general public remains low. This individual has been transferred out of an abundance of caution, and we’re pleased they remain well.”

UKHSA said it works with international partners to ensure that British residents who may be at risk can be safely returned home and receive the necessary treatment and care.

Ebola is a severe disease caused by the Ebola virus, with an incubation period ranging from two to 21 days.

The evacuated individual will remain under close monitoring and isolation during this period.
