Two Die as Truck and Bus Crash Causes Fire on Ogun Expressway

A fatal road crash at Ogere Junction along the Ijebu Ode–Benin expressway in the early hours of Thursday has claimed two lives, while two others escaped unhurt.

The accident occurred around 5:10am and involved a white Mack truck with registration number ABC660XC and an orange Peugeot J5 bus whose registration number could not be immediately ascertained.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday.

According to Odunsi, a total of four adult males were involved in the crash. Sadly, two of them lost their lives, while the remaining two escaped unhurt.

He explained, “Preliminary investigation indicates that the probable causes of the crash were route violation (RTV) and speed violation (SPV).

The impact of the collision led to the Peugeot J5 bus catching fire, with its front section completely burnt.

FRSC rescue personnel arrived at the scene within two minutes of being notified and immediately commenced traffic management.

The affected lane was diverted to the alternative carriageway to ease vehicular movement while efforts continued to remove the wreckage and restore free flow of traffic.

The remains of the deceased victims were evacuated by the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD), Ogbere Division, and deposited at the mortuary.”

Meanwhile, the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and stressed the importance of motorists obeying traffic regulations at all times.

Ogunjobi cautioned drivers against speeding and route violations, particularly during periods of poor visibility and on wet road surfaces, noting that such reckless driving behaviours remain major contributors to fatal crashes on Nigerian roads.

He reaffirmed the sector command’s commitment to ensuring safer roads through sustained enforcement, public enlightenment and prompt rescue operations, advising motorists to drive responsibly, maintain safe speeds, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before setting out on any journey.

On Tuesday, Odunsi had disclosed that over 161 people died in 415 road crashes across the state between January and May 2026, adding that within the period under review, 1,007 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries from the crashes.
