A woman identifying herself as a fetish priestess named Mercy has stormed a disputed parcel of land at Ashaiman, appearing to be in a trance-like state as she issued a stern warning to those occupying the site.
“Who did you ask for permission? Who sold the land to you? My name is Mercy, which is why I always have pity on you. We shall see,” she said, confronting the land occupants at the location.
According to accounts accompanying the video, the priestess claimed the land dispute had reached the attention of unnamed deities after being escalated by certain elders and the chief, and alleged that those parties were now “fighting for Ashaiman lands on their own.”
Ashaiman has been the site of several prolonged land disputes in recent years, including a long-running conflict at the Ashaiman Traffic enclave that the town’s chief, Nii Annang Adjor Amui III, has attributed to overlapping lease arrangements over the same parcels of land, as well as a separate dispute involving traders resisting eviction from land under court injunction.
The identity of the priestess, the specific site involved, and the parties on either side of this particular dispute have not been verified.
In Ghanaian traditional religious practice, fetish priests and priestesses serve as intermediaries between deities and the living, often invoked to mediate or pronounce judgment on disputes, including those involving land.
