A man has rescued a huge sea turtle discovered tied with a rope along a seashore, releasing it safely back into the sea before the animal could reportedly be killed.
According to the man, he believes whoever tied the turtle had temporarily left the scene to search for a cutting tool, presumably intending to kill it, when he came upon the animal and intervened.
The specific location, the man’s identity, and the species of turtle involved have not been independently verified. Judging from the dialect, it appears the incident happened in one of the coastal towns in the Western Region.
Sea turtles along West Africa’s coastline, including Ghana’s, are protected under national wildlife regulations and international conservation agreements, with several species classified as endangered or vulnerable due to threats including bycatch, poaching for meat and shells, and habitat loss.
Rescues of turtles found trapped, injured, or restrained along coastlines have been documented periodically across Ghana and other coastal nations, often carried out by fishermen or local residents who come across the animals before they can be harmed.
