2027: Igbo group rejects Uzodimma, Umahi, Nwebonyi endorsement of Tinubu

The Igbo Community Association in the Federal Capital Territory has rejected statements attributed to Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; Minister of Works, David Umahi; and Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Onyekachi Nwebonyi, suggesting that the South-East electorate is united behind President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The association described itself as the umbrella socio-cultural organisation representing Igbo residents across Abuja.

It said the three political figures had no mandate to declare a political consensus on behalf of the Igbo people.

The group stated this in a press statement signed by its President General, Nze Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe.

According to the association, elected officials, political appointees and ruling-party figures cannot unilaterally speak for millions of Igbo citizens on their political choices.

It also described the endorsements as personal political positions that did not represent what it called the true political stance, socio-economic realities and grassroots sentiment in the South-East.

The association further claimed that there was widespread dissatisfaction with the current Federal Government across the region and rejected assertions that Tinubu would sweep the five South-East states in the 2027 election.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Ellis-Ezenekwe said: “The two of you are not presently the spokespersons of Igbos, neither is Senator Nwaebonyi a spokesperson.

“These three are merely being sent out to talk for Tinubu against the interest of Igbos.

“The South-East considers the Tinubu administration as a failed administration and for this reason will not vote Tinubu.”

The association maintained that statements suggesting political unanimity in the South-East were detached from what it described as prevailing conditions in the region.

It urged public officials from the South-East to concentrate on their constitutional responsibilities, governance and the immediate economic needs of their constituents.

The group also cautioned them against what it described as attempts to trade away the political sovereignty of the Igbo electorate for personal leverage ahead of the 2027 election.
