46 dead, 15 rescued in Sokoto boat mishap

At least 46 people have died after a boat carrying 77 passengers capsized in Gorau community, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The accident occurred on Thursday while the boat was reportedly conveying farmers, including women and children, to their rice farms.
Fifteen passengers have so far been rescued, while 16 others remain missing, according to the Sokoto State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said rescue operations were ongoing as of the time of filing the report.
He said local divers, officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the police were involved in the search-and-rescue operation.
The cause of the accident was not immediately disclosed.
