The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has reportedly stormed Makola Market in Accra following concerns over the sale of cigarette-shaped toffees believed to be targeting children.
A video circulating on social media shows FDA officials and some traders during the operation, with boxes of the candy-like products being displayed as authorities questioned their sale at the busy market.
The products, which are designed to resemble cigarettes, have sparked concerns among some members of the public who fear that such items could encourage children to develop interest in smoking habits at an early age.
According to reports, the FDA’s action was aimed at addressing the distribution of the products and ensuring that items available on the Ghanaian market comply with safety regulations.
The appearance of the cigarette-shaped sweets has generated debate online, with many users questioning why products that imitate tobacco items are allowed to circulate, especially when children are likely to be attracted to them.
