A disturbing scene has emerged after suspected illegal miners, popularly known as galamseyers, were reportedly spotted operating in the River Offin in search of gold.
In a video circulating online, mining equipment could be seen positioned on the river as individuals appeared to be carrying out excavation activities directly within the water body.
The development has sparked concerns among environmental advocates and residents, who have repeatedly warned about the impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s rivers, forests, and water supply.
The River Offin is among several water bodies in Ghana that have been affected by illegal mining activities, with authorities over the years launching operations to clamp down on galamsey and protect the country’s natural resources.
Many Ghanaians have expressed frustration over the continued destruction of water bodies, calling for stronger enforcement measures against those engaging in illegal mining.
Authorities are yet to comment on the reported activity shown in the video or confirm the exact location and individuals involved.
