Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has threatened to seek the intervention of United States President Donald Trump if the forthcoming Osun State governorship election is allegedly rigged.
Mr Davido made the remarks during a livestream hosted by social media personality Carter Efe, while discussing his interest in politics and concerns over Nigeria’s electoral system.
The singer said he would venture into politics only when there was greater transparency in the electoral process, expressing confidence that he could win any election conducted freely and fairly.
“Until there’s transparency, then I can go ahead with politics because nobody can beat me in any election. If there’s a free and fair election, let everybody come out to vote, I will win. But because of the system, there’s no transparency; they write the results,” he said.
Speaking about the re-election bid of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Davido said he was closely watching developments ahead of the election.
“I want to see what they are going to do in Osun. We are waiting,” he said.
Mr Davido further threatened to draw Trump’s attention to the election if he believed the process had been compromised.
“I’ll tag Trump, I’ll call Trump, everybody. If they still don’t see anything, I’ll go in front of the White House and say, ‘Help us.’ They think it’s a joke,” he said.
He added that he believed Trump would take notice of his appeal.
“Trump will just say, ‘I think there’s a Nigerian artiste sending me a message. Don’t worry, my message will be delivered,’” he said.
Mr Davido concluded by appealing to those involved in the electoral process to leave Osun State alone.
“Leave Osun alone oo, leave it,” he said.
