Kano Sharia Commission bans ‘attachment’ practice by tricycle riders

Kano State Sharia Commission has banned the practice popularly known as “attachment”, in which commercial tricycle (keke napep) riders carry female passengers on the sides of their tricycles, describing it as contrary to Islamic teachings due to the close physical contact involved.
The directive was announced by the Commission’s Second Commissioner, Sheikh Ali Danabba, during a meeting with the leadership of the Tricycle Owners and Riders Association (BOTORA), aimed at strengthening collaboration to improve orderliness and professionalism in the commercial tricycle transport sector across Kano State.
Danabba said operators must immediately stop carrying female passengers on either side of their tricycles under the “attachment” arrangement, stressing that the practice is prohibited under Islamic law because it involves unnecessary physical proximity between male riders and female passengers.

According to him, the meeting was convened to enhance cooperation between the Sharia Commission and the association in addressing challenges affecting the state.
He said discussions also focused on measures to combat child abduction, curb the abuse and trafficking of illicit drugs, and promote discipline and ethical conduct among commercial tricycle operators.
The commissioner urged tricycle operators to comply with the directive and support efforts aimed at promoting moral values, public order and safety across the state.
Speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of BOTORA pledged the association’s full cooperation with the Sharia Commission in promoting public safety, social order and the overall development of Kano State.
The meeting was attended by the Second Commissioner of the Kano State Sharia Commission, Sheikh Ali Danabba; Commissioner Gwani Dahir Yakasai; directors and other senior officials of the commission; as well as the BOTORA chairman and members of his executive team.
