Progressive criminal justice protects ONLY the powerful and famous

New York City now has one law for thugs to go after everyday Gothamites, and another for loons who dare to attack the powerful. 

Consider Andrew Truelove, the madman who tried to storm the “Today” show and screamed a racial slur at host Craig Melvin: He’s rightly now behind bars — and set to stay there, thanks to a judge’s call to remand him into custody for violating his probation on a criminal mischief charge.

That’s how it’s supposed to work: Commit an explosive act of public menace and get put away to cool heels until your day in court. 

But contrast that correct call with the 50-plus — yes, 50-plus — arrests on the rap sheet of Queens maniac Shaleek Brunson. 

On Tuesday, Brunson reportedly went after a random passerby with a hammer; she was only saved by a heroic security guard after she fled into a Jewish school. 

Brunson is a career thug, with a bust as recent as the previous Friday for stealing $1,300 in goods from Bergdorf’s — an arrest that saw him released without bail, even though the crime followed on another July 10 bust for stealing, which also brought release without bail. 

Before that came dozens more arrests, as well as a long history of mental health episodes and alleged gang connections — plus a reported 24 sealed busts. 

Insanely, thanks to city and state criminal justice “reforms”, Brunson may walk after the hammer attack, too.

The message here is clear. 

As long as a violent lunatic confines his predation to people without status, money or power, our woke justice system will give him chance after chance.

Just this summer, we saw Zaki Smith (14 priors) push an older woman onto the subway tracks in Manhattan and Rhamell Burke kill Ross Falzone by pushing him down subway stairs; Burke had notched up four arrests just since February, including a violent meltdown in a different train station. 

But go after a TV celebrity, and they can’t slam the cell door shut quickly enough. 

The law is supposed to protect all New Yorkers, not just bigshots. 

But for the progressive backers of cashless bail, Kafkaesque discovery laws and every other anti-public-safety innovation, the collateral carnage just doesn’t matter.
