Tanzania Vice President Resigns After President Calls for Change

Tanzania’s Vice President Emmanuel John Nchimbi has resigned from his position, effective September 4, 2026.

In a letter dated Tuesday, August 25, sent to President Samia Suluhu, Nchimbi formally notified the government of his decision to step down and retire completely from public service.

Nchimbi cited constitutional provisions that allow holders of senior positions to voluntarily resign.

In his letter, he said he had pledged when taking office just over a year ago to serve with integrity and to step aside whenever the President felt change was needed.

He stated that President Suluhu had expressed a desire for a different Vice President, which prompted his resignation.

Nchimbi took office in September 2025 after serving as Suluhu’s running mate in the country’s general elections the previous month.

The Vice President thanked Tanzanians for their cooperation during his tenure and assured the country he would remain a good citizen.

He also expressed gratitude to President Suluhu and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party for their confidence in his leadership.

His departure comes after less than a year in the role, marking a significant shift in the President’s leadership team.
