Nollywood actress Tayo Adeniyi has encouraged women, particularly those in their late 30s and 40s, to avoid measuring personal fulfilment exclusively through marriage and parenthood, arguing that meaningful lives can be constructed without either.
In social media commentary, the actress advocated for women to “de-centre” marriage and children, emphasising that happiness and wholeness are achievable independently.
Addressing women who have pursued but not achieved marriage or parenthood, she urged them to prioritise their own wellbeing rather than sacrificing it to meet societal expectations.
She stressed that women need not compromise themselves or endure unhealthy relationships to satisfy external pressures toward matrimony or motherhood.
The actress characterised marriage and parenthood as circumstances that should unfold naturally rather than through deliberate pursuit, cautioning against forcing these outcomes when they do not materialise organically.
She affirmed that women can experience contentment and meaningful existence without spousal or parental roles.
In further elaboration, Adeniyi clarified that “de-centering” marriage and children does not constitute rejection but rather a refusal to establish these circumstances as the foundation of personal identity and worth.
She identified purpose, peace, service, personal growth and love as alternative sources of meaningful life construction, encouraging women to prioritise self-regard and recognise their inherent sufficiency independent of relational status.
