Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku has expressed concern over what he describes as a lack of commitment from some state institutions towards supporting the enforcement of Ghana’s rent laws.
According to him, the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and the Ghana Police Service have shown little interest in collaborating with the Rent Control Department despite previous efforts to seek their support.
Mr Frederick Opoku said he wrote to the institutions several months ago requesting cooperation to strengthen the implementation of rent regulations, but none of them has responded or demonstrated readiness to work with the department.
He, however, praised the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Samuel Basintale Amadu, for being the only head of an institution to show willingness to collaborate and support efforts by the Rent Control Department.
The Acting Rent Commissioner believes stronger cooperation among state agencies is necessary to address challenges within Ghana’s rental sector and ensure that existing laws are effectively enforced.
His comments come amid ongoing concerns about difficulties faced by tenants, including high rent charges, illegal demands by some landlords, and challenges in accessing affordable housing.
Mr Frederick Opoku has called for a more coordinated approach among government institutions to help protect both tenants and landlords while promoting compliance with the country’s rent regulations.
