They were driven in a motorcade to meet Trump and the First Lady for afternoon tea as part of plans to commemorate the 250th anniversary of US independence.

They proceeded to the White House, where they were greeted by Trump and first lady Melania Trump. The four stood briefly for photographers before retreating inside for a private tea.

A spokesperson for the palace said: “Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of Government, we can confirm the state visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned.

“The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the visit getting under way tomorrow.”

Most of their engagements will take place as planned, although with some modest tweaks to the trip.

The four-day visit comes at a time UK-US relations have come under strain.

Today, Donald Trump is expected to hold a closed-door meeting with King Charles in the Oval Office, breaking from the televised meeting style that has come to define the president’s visits with foreign leaders during his first year back in office.

Trump is scheduled to sit down with His Majesty Tuesday, April 28 as part of a flurry of activities the White House has planned for the first state visit by a British sovereign since Queen Elizabeth in 2007.

It’s also the king’s first trip to the United States since his 2022 coronation.
