NFF opens talks with Osula over Eagles switch

Newcastle striker, William Osula, is said to have been contacted by the Nigeria Football Federation for a potential invitation to the Super Eagles, The PidomNigeria reports.

Born in Aarhus, Denmark, to a Nigerian father and a Danish mother, Osula was recently called up by the Denmark national team, but he is yet to make his debut.

He has also scored goals for the U-21 national team – eight in 15 matches –, but he has never made his debut for Brian Riemer’s team, and Nigeria are looking to take advantage of that.

According to a Danish journalist, Farzam Abolhosseini, the NFF has contacted the player through sources close to him.

“William Osula, who as recently as March was in Brian Riemer’s national team squad for the fateful World Cup qualifiers against North Macedonia and the Czech Republic, is in the situation where he has to choose between Denmark or Nigeria,” Abolhosseini wrote via Danish outlet Tipsbladet.

“Tipsbladet can reveal that the Premier League striker, who has a transfer market value of €15m, has been contacted through his backroom staff by the Nigerian Football Association, who want to steal him away from Denmark.”

This comes at a time when Osula is in excellent goal-scoring form for Newcastle United in the English Premier League.

Like Nigeria, Denmark also did not qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, but the NFF has the Unity Cup and two international friendlies against Poland and Portugal lined up for the Super Eagles in May and June.

Head coach Eric Chelle had disclosed that he would comb the Nigeria Premier Football League and Nigerian players born abroad to prosecute the Unity Cup.

But with the tournament not falling within the FIFA international window, Osula, of he decides to play for Nigeria might not feature in that tournament.

In his last four Premier League games, the 22-year-old striker has scored three goals, including the match-winning goal against Manchester United and Saturday’s goal against Bournemouth.

Denmark coach Riemer has also spoken highly of Osula’s qualities, which he did during the latest national team meeting.

“He has exceptional top-level skills with his speed, and he has a pressing game that is insanely good. He comes into the camp with something that can help the team to such an extent, and he is really good at coming in and changing football games,” the national coach told TV 2.

The NFF and the Denmark Football Federation are yet to make comments on the player’s status.
