Rising Insecurity Threatens 2027 Elections as Experts Warn of Voter Fear and Possible Disruptions

There are genuine concerns that if insecurity is not addressed, it could have a detrimental impact on election behavior and results as the 2027 general elections draw near due to the nation’s recent wave of kidnappings, murders, and overall instability.
Numerous communities are in ruins due to widespread abductions, murders, and property devastation, especially in states like Borno, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Niger. People who reside in the impacted areas continue to experience severe psychological anguish, job loss, and displacement.
For instance, people in some areas in Kaduna State deal with kidnapping, murder, and ransom demands nearly every day. Over thirty worshippers from the Ariko hamlet in Kaduna State’s Kachia Local Government area were abducted during Easter in April 2026 alone. A N1 billion ransom was then requested after five people were killed.
In a new attack on the Awon hamlet in Kaduna State on Monday, April 20, 2026, bandits killed two locals and kidnapped at least seven more.
Six persons were kidnapped by suspected bandits on April 1, 2026, after Taraweeh prayers at a mosque in the state’s Azara hamlet of Kachia LGA.
Dr. Samson Abdul, Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Abuja, told a DAILY POST correspondent in Kaduna that nothing could be accomplished without peace.
He claims that there is no peace in the majority of the nation’s communities where kidnappings and murders occur, and that some of them are currently in IDP camps due to the destruction of their homes and other property and the lack of a means of subsistence.
“I can speak from personal experience because I was a victim once. There’s no peace of mind. For the following two to three years, the whole population of the areas where the kidnapping occurred won’t be able to sleep since they either lost a family member or had to sell their prized assets, such as homes, automobiles, and property, in order to pay the ransom.
Additionally, Mallam Abdulraham Yakubu, a former candidate for the Kaduna State PDP House of Assembly in the general election of 2015, said that without tackling insecurity across the country, the 2027 general election is a mirage, as fear may not allow voters to come out to vote for candidates of their choice.
“If elections were held today, with the rate of killings and kidnappings going on, voters would be scared because of attacks,” he said. Without knowing where their voter cards are, a number of locals in attack-prone areas were forced to relocate. Election officials and candidates’ lives are also in jeopardy. When the safety of people and property is uncertain, no one wants to put their life in danger to cast a ballot.
According to Major General Nureeden Adebayo (rtd), who runs a private security company, there are not enough security personnel—police, army, NSCDC, etc.—to ensure free, fair, and credible elections throughout the nation.
Aside from that, the few security guards that are currently on duty are dwindling daily. You hear that bandits have slain 20, 30, 10, or 5 security personnel today. Some are ill, some are about to retire, etc. He questioned, “Where are the security personnel to stand firm against bandits and insurgents during elections?”
He recommended that the electoral body and candidates for various elective offices postpone the 2027 general elections in order to address the growing instability.
