Rotimi Amaechi, a former minister of transportation, claims that his background in infrastructure development and governance puts him in a position to handle Nigeria’s problems before the general elections of 2027.
Speaking on Friday’s episode of Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Amaechi claimed to be aware of and capable of resolving the nation’s issues.
“I don’t give a damn who is running. Being a Nigerian candidate is the reason I’m running. because I am aware of the Nigerian issue. He added, “And I am able to resolve the Nigerian issue.”
The former governor of Rivers State demonstrated his ability by pointing to achievements completed while in office, such as port development and rail lines. He also claimed to have tackled insecurity while serving in government, adding that his record sets him apart from other contenders.
Amaechi, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, criticised the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu, saying the economic situation had worsened. According to him, many Nigerians are experiencing hardship and are dissatisfied with the state of the economy.
“Everybody is suffering, everybody is looking for food to eat. People can’t buy fuel, can’t travel. The airlines are threatening to increase the cost of transportation; everything is skyrocketing.
For heaven’s sake, President Tinubu is not authorized to talk. He suggested they shouldn’t vote for him if he doesn’t deliver on his promise of power. He declared, “Nigerians are waiting to vote him out.”
Amaechi called for the independence of organizations like the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission and accused attempts to undermine opposition parties.
“If we [ADC] are on the ballot, President Bola Tinubu would lose the election regardless of whether it is free or fair. He doesn’t want a strong candidate on the ballot, which is the issue, Amaechi said.
Amaechi is one of numerous well-known candidates in the ADC’s 2027 presidential campaign. Other key figures in the opposition coalition include Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasir El-Rufai and Rauf Aregbesola.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed January 16, 2027, for the presidential election.
The commission also scheduled party primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026, during which political parties are expected to select their candidates.
