2027: Abia Central APC stakeholders Petition Party Chairman, accuse chieftain  of sabotage

ABUJA – A coalition of All Progressives Congress stakeholders from Abia Central Senatorial District has petitioned the party’s National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, over alleged moves to undermine the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. 

The group accused APC chieftain Hon. Sam Onuigbo of working to destabilise the party, saying his actions posed a threat to its unity and electoral prospects in Abia State.

In a petition made available to newsmen in Abuja, on Tuesday, the group dismissed allegations of electoral malpractice leveled against the May 18 APC senatorial primary as a “calculated campaign of falsehood.” 

Chief Onuigbo’s supporters had petitioned the party alleging that the process and outcome of the Senatorial primary were manipulated.

In response, the stakeholders identified Uche Onyejekwe and Mrs. Ego Nwamuo, who filed the earlier petition, as personal staff members of Onuigbo and residents of his home community of Ibere in Ikwuano Local Government Area. They said the duo did not represent the broader interests of the party’s senatorial leadership. 

The counter petition accused Onuigbo of acting as a “paid mercenary” intent on scuttling the party’s chances in Abia State. It cited his involvement in prolonged litigation after the 2023 elections, which the signatories said distracted the party from its campaign objectives. 

Addressing the May 18 primary, the group defended the exercise as transparent and reflective of the will of party faithful. It provided the following results to back its claim of a landslide victory: Hon. Emeka Atuma, 36,935 votes; Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, 11,457 votes; Hon. Sam Onuigbo, 5,833 votes. 

The stakeholders argued that Onuigbo’s poor showing reflected his lack of grassroots support, describing his protests as an attempt to “manufacture a crisis” where none existed. 

They urged the APC National Working Committee to disregard the petitions filed by Onuigbo’s associates, insisting that the primary met all electoral requirements. 

The group called on the party leadership to focus on building momentum toward 2027 rather than entertaining what it termed “fictitious allegations.” 

The petition was signed by Mrs. Ngozi Orji, former Executive Chairman of Ikwuano LGA; Tony Eze of Umuahia North; Dr. Max Adindu, former member of the Abia State House of Assembly from Umuahia South; Obioma Chigbu of Isiala-Ngwa South; Dennis Amalagha of Isiala Ngwa North; and Nneoma B. Nwaigwe of Osisioma LGA. 

As of press time, the APC national leadership had not issued a formal response to the petition.
