2027: Lawyer emerges DLA presidential candidate

Barrister Samuel Memeh has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Democratic Leadership Alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections following the successful conduct of the party’s presidential primary across the country.

The party announced Memeh’s emergence in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Judith Aguenu describing the exercise as peaceful and in line with the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines.

According to the statement, delegates across the federation participated in the affirmation process which produced Memeh as the party’s consensus candidate for the presidential election.

“The Democratic Leadership Alliance successfully conducted its presidential primary election today across the federation, culminating in the adoption and affirmation of Barr Samuel Memeh as the party’s consensus presidential candidate for the forthcoming elections,” the statement read.

The party said officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission were present during the exercise to observe the proceedings.

“The exercise was peacefully conducted in line with the Constitution of the Party and relevant electoral guidelines, with duly accredited party delegates participating in the affirmation process. Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission were also present to witness the proceedings,” it added.

The DLA also commended party members and stakeholders for what it described as their commitment to democratic ideals during the primary process.

“The party commends all aspirants, delegates, stakeholders, and members for their maturity, unity, and commitment to democratic values throughout the process,” the statement said.

The emergence of Memeh as consensus candidate, according to the party, signals its determination to present a united front ahead of the 2027 polls.

“The emergence of Barr Samuel Memeh as the consensus candidate reflects the collective resolve of the party to move forward with a united front in pursuit of credible leadership and national transformation,” the statement noted.

The party further reaffirmed its commitment to what it called issue-driven politics and democratic governance.

“The DLA remains committed to issue-based politics, internal democracy, and the vision of securing a better future for all Nigerians,” it stated.

DLA is one of 20 opposition parties seeking to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 elections.

Although still relatively new in the nation’s political landscape, the DLA has in recent months intensified efforts to build structures across states while positioning itself as an alternative platform focused on governance reforms, accountability, and youth inclusion.

The rise of opposition movements has gained momentum amid growing dissatisfaction among sections of Nigerians over economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and the widening trust deficit between citizens and the political class.

Political analysts say parties like the DLA are hoping to capitalise on the growing demand for alternative leadership options ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 presidential election.

Memeh is expected to unveil his policy direction and campaign agenda in the coming weeks as the party begins nationwide consultations and mobilisation ahead of the polls.
