APC clears governorship aspirants for primaries in Oyo
By Adeola Badru
The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, has confirmed that none of its governorship aspirants has been disqualified from participating in the party’s gubernatorial primary scheduled for tomorrow.
The clarification came amid widespread speculation alleging that a former Minister of Power and prominent governorship hopeful, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, had been excluded from the contest.
Speaking with journalists at the APC Secretariat in Oke-Ado, Ibadan, on Wednesday, the Chairman of the APC House of Assembly/Governorship Primaries Election Committee in Oyo State, Taofeek Olawale Abdulsalam, dismissed the rumours and affirmed that all duly registered aspirants remained eligible to contest.
Abdulsalam, a former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, further assured party members of a peaceful and orderly primary election.
“We have been here since yesterday, and we are satisfied with what we have seen so far. Tomorrow will be a better day for APC members in Oyo State,” he said.
He also clarified that the committee’s role was strictly limited to the conduct and collation of results, which would be transmitted to the party’s national secretariat for official announcement.
“We have no power to announce the results. At the end of the primaries, our responsibility is to forward the results to the national headquarters of the party for announcement,” Abdulsalam stated.
He further disclosed that a Monitoring Committee had been put in place to guarantee transparency and fairness throughout the exercise.
In a related development, the Chairman of the APC Primaries Election Monitoring Committee in the state, Ayo Afolabi, also assured party members of comprehensive monitoring and a credible electoral process during the primaries
