Basketmouth Slams Nigeria’s Obsession With Scandals Over Real Achievements

Comedian and filmmaker Basketmouth has voiced his frustration over what he sees as a growing culture that rewards controversy while overlooking genuine excellence and hard work.

In a post shared on his social media page, the entertainer took aim at certain Nigerian blogs and media platforms, accusing them of consistently prioritising scandals and embarrassing moments over real achievements and meaningful contributions to society.

He argued that individuals who build businesses, create employment, break new ground or make a positive difference in people’s lives rarely receive the same level of attention that online controversies attract, and expressed disappointment that this has become an accepted norm.

Basketmouth lamented that society has gradually drifted toward celebrating mediocrity and outrage, questioning why success stories no longer generate the same level of excitement or engagement as public scandals.

He noted that a remarkable achievement might pass with little or no coverage, while a single embarrassing moment can dominate every platform for days.

He further questioned when the celebration of failure became normalised, warning that continuously amplifying downfall over achievement risks discouraging ambition and dimming the desire for greatness.

He also raised concern that a society obsessed with negativity could end up raising generations that no longer value excellence, discipline, creativity or consistency.

Calling for a meaningful shift in priorities, Basketmouth urged Nigerians to return to celebrating innovation, hard work and positive impact, and to move away from a culture dominated by gossip, outrage and the glorification of others’ failures.
