Executive Assistant on Political Matters to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, Dr Jennifer Adasen, has said that children are the future of society and must be nurtured with love, guidance and proper moral upbringing.

She said this while celebrating Children’s Day in the Arhawarien community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, which came alive with excitement, laughter and celebration.

The event, which attracted pupils, teachers, parents, market women, youth groups and community leaders, was a memorable occasion filled with fun, learning and economic support for local traders.

The celebration commenced on a vibrant note with an intellectually stimulating quiz and debate competition involving pupils from different schools within the community and neighboring areas. The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm as pupils demonstrated academic excellence, confidence, and impressive communication skills.

The quiz and debate sessions provided an opportunity for the children to showcase their intelligence and talents, while also fostering healthy competition among participating schools. Teachers and parents could not hide their excitement as the children displayed exceptional brilliance in answering questions on various subjects.

As the competition progressed, the celebration snowballed into colorful cultural displays by pupils dressed in traditional attires representing the rich cultural heritage of the Urhobo people. The performances featured traditional dances, drama presentations, songs, and displays of indigenous customs, earning applause from dignitaries and attendees.

The cultural performances not only entertained guests but also served as a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural identity among younger generations.

At the end of the competitions, schools that performed exceptionally well were rewarded with gifts and cash prizes in recognition of their efforts and outstanding performances. Barr. Adasen also ensured that children who courageously answered questions from the audience were appreciated with gifts, thereby encouraging active participation and boosting their confidence.

For many of the pupils, the event was more than just a Children’s Day celebration; it was an opportunity to feel appreciated, inspired, and motivated to strive for excellence in their academics and personal lives.

The Children’s Day party further took a joyful turn as the atmosphere transformed into a carnival-like celebration. Excited children danced freely, laughed heartily, and enjoyed various refreshments provided at the event. It was indeed a day of happiness and fulfillment as many of the children ate to their satisfaction and interacted freely with one another.

Parents and guardians who accompanied their wards to the event expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that it provided an avenue for children in the community to experience love, care, and celebration.

However, beyond celebrating the children, Barr. Jennifer Oma Adasen extended her goodwill to petty traders in the community, particularly market women and small-scale business owners.

In a gesture that further endeared her to the people, the Executive Assistant distributed cash gifts to petty traders to support their various businesses and improve their means of livelihood. Beneficiaries, many of whom expressed surprise and gratitude, described the intervention as timely and impactful, especially considering prevailing economic realities.

Some of the traders who spoke during the event said the financial support would go a long way in helping them restock goods, expand their businesses, and better cater for their families.

Addressing newsmen, Adasen described children as her “real constituents,” emphasizing that celebrating with them gives her immense joy and fulfillment.

According to her, children remain the future of society and must be nurtured with love, guidance, and proper moral upbringing.

“The children are my real constituents, and celebrating with them gives me joy. They are the future of our society, and we must continue to encourage them to become responsible citizens,” she stated.

Adasen further explained that celebrating children and investing in their growth would encourage them to become good ambassadors of their families, communities, and the nation as they grow.

According to her, meaningful engagement with children at an early stage would inspire discipline, excellence, patriotism, and self-confidence.

“When children are celebrated and encouraged, they grow with confidence and purpose. It gives them reasons to become good ambassadors tomorrow. We must invest in them because they represent the future of our society,” she added.

When asked what inspired her decision to empower petty traders during a Children’s Day celebration, Barr. Adasen explained that while children must be encouraged to take their studies seriously, their parents also deserve support to better cater for their needs.

She stressed that children cannot thrive in an environment where parents struggle to provide the most basic necessities of life.

“While we encourage children to remain focused on their education and become responsible citizens, we must not forget the role parents play in shaping their future.”
