A suspected serial killer arrested in Creektown Forest has confessed to the murder of at least 30 people, security sources said yesterday.

The suspect, simply identified as Akaninyene of Obot Akara, was arrested after military and tactical police operatives acting on a tip-off tracked him to an isolated hut he constructed inside Creektown’s Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community. Community youths and elders assisted in the operation.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity told Vanguard on Friday that the suspect was actually arrested in the forest, while the whole Saga took over two days before everything was unraveled.

According to him, upon arrival, operatives found Akaninyene inside the compound (forest hut).

He attempted to arm himself and flee into the forest but was quickly overpowered and taken into custody, sources said.

“A subsequent search of the compound uncovered multiple shallow graves, with about eight pits exhumed.

“Each grave contained up to five decomposing bodies buried without heads, and plantain crops had been planted over the sites, apparently to conceal the burials.

During interrogation, Akaninyene allegedly confessed to killing about 30 persons who had previously been reported missing in the community.

He admitted that the last killing, which precipitated his arrest, occurred on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

He further implicated a woman, saying she helped lure victims to the hut and physically held victims’ heads while he carried out the killings.

“The suspect confessed to the murders and led operatives to the graves,” a security source said. “He claimed a lady assisted him by luring victims into their den and restraining them during the attacks.”

The alarm was raised after neighbours heard a struggle and cries from the most recent victim.

Hon. Ene Itam, councillor representing Creektown Ward 1, together with the ward chairman, youths and elders, reported the missing persons to the Executive Chairman of Odukpani LGA, Rt. Hon. Elder Chief Ukpong Etim Asido, who promptly alerted security agencies.

The Leader of the 8th Legislative Assembly in Odukpani LGA, Hon. Effiom Ekene, and Hon. Emmanuel of Adibo Efut Ward also joined efforts that led to the arrest.

Community leaders commended the swift response of military and police tactical teams and praised Creektown youths for their vigilance. Residents have intensified bush‑combing operations to locate other possible hideouts and to uncover additional victims.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer ASP Sunday Eitokpah confirmed the incident but said the matter remains under investigation.

“The incident is true and under active investigation. Further revelations will be made public as the probe progresses,” he said.
