Former Kano State governor and National Democratic Congress leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has firmly denied allegations that he is covertly supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political ambitions ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso made the denial during a television interview, dismissing those behind the claims as individuals who lack a proper understanding of how politics works.
He made clear that both he and his supporters are committed solely to the NDC and to pursuing what they believe is in the best interest of Nigerians.
While acknowledging that he and President Tinubu share a long-standing personal relationship, Kwankwaso was emphatic that this does not translate into shared political goals or ideology, stressing that the two men belong to entirely different political camps.
He also levelled criticism at some of those within the president’s inner circle, alleging that certain aides are shielding Tinubu from the true state of affairs in the country.
He claimed that rather than channelling their energy into tackling Nigeria’s pressing economic and security challenges, some presidential aides are preoccupied with convincing governors and politicians to defect to the ruling APC.
On the subject of his alliance with Peter Obi, Kwankwaso explained that the decision to back Obi was the product of careful consultations and political analysis, and that the coalition concluded he was the most fitting candidate from the southern part of the country.
He expressed confidence that the coalition still has ample time before the 2027 general election to engage Nigerians directly, address the rumours circulating against them, and present a credible alternative to the country’s current leadership challenges.
