MASSOB hails compliance with Biafra Day sit-at-home

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has commended residents across the South-East and other parts of the former Eastern Region for participating in Saturday’s sit-at-home observance marking the 59th anniversary of the declaration of Biafra.

The group described the level of compliance as a reflection of the people’s commitment to remembering those who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War and the events surrounding the Biafran struggle.

In a statement issued on Saturday, MASSOB leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu, expressed appreciation to residents for observing the anniversary of the May 30, 1967 declaration of Biafra by the late General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

According to him, the observance demonstrated respect for the history of the civil war and the sacrifices of those affected by the conflict.

“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the people of Biafra for their commitment to honoring the memory of General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and the anniversary of the declaration of Biafra,” Madu said.

He stated that the level of participation recorded during the sit-at-home exercise underscored the importance many residents attach to the remembrance of the period.

Madu also reaffirmed MASSOB’s commitment to pursuing its objectives through non-violent means, stressing that the group would continue its advocacy in line with its stated principles.

“We salute your resolve and dedication as we continue to strive for a better future for all Biafrans through MASSOB’s principles of non-violence in self-determination activism,” he said.

The MASSOB leader further appealed to churches across the South-East to organise memorial services and special prayers in honour of those who died during the civil war.

According to him, such programmes would provide opportunities for reflection and remembrance of the victims of the conflict.

The annual May 30 observance is marked by pro-Biafra groups as a day of remembrance for those who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War, which lasted from 1967 to 1970.
