Nigerian newspapers review: [APC Senate primaries] Okowa, Abiodun, Uzodimma win; Ned Nwoko, Goje, others lose

In today’s Nigerian newspapers review programme, Today in the News, Vanguard leads with the All Progressives Congress, APC, senatorial primaries across the country producing high-profile winners and losers, amid disqualifications, protests, consensus arrangements and allegations of manipulation.

Another headline features the reported killing of one of the teachers abducted along with some students in some schools in Ahoro-Esinele in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, which has raised serious concerns among relatives of victims still being held captive. 

Vanguard also reports that the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has closed the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its 2027 presidential ticket amid indications that only the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, bought the forms.

Moving to the next paper, The Guardian leads with the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, which has triggered fresh political controversy as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) accused President Bola Tinubu of political persecution, while the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) defended its custody procedures and denied allegations of inhumane treatment.

The Punch reports that food inflation remained above 20 per cent in 11 states in April 2026, even as national food inflation surpassed headline inflation for the first time in eight months, signalling renewed pressure on household purchasing power across the country.

Lastly, The Nation leads with a large number of incumbent senators and governors securing tickets to contest for seats in the 11th Senate.
