IBADAN— THE Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, yesterday, declared that Nigeria’s growing security and economic challenges can only be effectively addressed through a return to righteousness and genuine fear of God.

The Alaafin, in his Eid-el-Kabir message by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, said the country’s numerous problems were rooted in a decline in moral consciousness and accountability before God.

He added that the distrust and division among Nigeria’s ethnic and religious groups were also consequences of declining spiritual values and insincerity among citizens.

The Alaafin stressed that the essence of religion, as taught by Allah through His prophets and messengers, was unconditional submission to the will of God.

The royal father said: “The various threats to security bedevilling our society and the resultant implications for the economy are nothing but results of a lack of consciousness of ultimate accountability to God, especially in the life to come.

“That is the only concept of religion acceptable to God.

“What we need, as a nation, are sincere, concerted and sustained efforts towards propagating the kind of God-consciousness demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim. It will surely guarantee our nation and individuals a lasting solution to all the challenges confronting us.

“However, all Allah wanted Ibrahim to demonstrate was the unreserved willingness to comply, not the actual slaughter of his son.”

The Alaafin, who urged Nigerians to cultivate the habit of doing good at all times, said: “Another lesson is that Nigerians should learn the habit of doing good at all times since anyone can leave this world at any time.”
