Supporters rally behind Dozie Ogenyi at NDC primaries in Enugu

Large crowds of supporters turned out across several parts of Enugu State on Friday in support of governorship aspirant Hon. Dozie Ogenyi during the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries.

Ogenyi, accompanied by senatorial aspirant, Bishop Oscar Okwudili Ossai, and other party chieftains, visited designated primary election venues in Nsukka, Igbo-Eze South, Uzo-Uwani and other local government areas, where enthusiastic supporters reportedly gathered in large numbers for the governorship aspirant.

Speaking to journalists in Nsukka, Ogenyi expressed satisfaction with the turnout of party members, describing it as evidence of widespread support for his aspiration. He, however, lamented delays caused by party officials expected to arrive from Enugu to conduct the primaries.

According to him, many party faithful had assembled at the venues early in the day but were left waiting due to the absence of the officials responsible for supervising the exercise.

At the Nsukka venue, supporters of the governorship aspirant formed long queues behind him while displaying campaign posters and chanting solidarity songs. Similar scenes were reported at Ibagwa-Aka in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area and Nimbo in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, where supporters reportedly cheered Ogenyi on arrival.

Observers at some of the venues noted that while there were aspirants contesting for House of Representatives and House of Assembly positions, there appeared to be limited visible support for other governorship aspirants.

Despite the large turnout, many NDC members expressed dissatisfaction with the arrangements for the primaries. Party officials expected to conduct the exercise in Nsukka reportedly failed to arrive throughout the day, with supporters beginning to disperse by evening.

Addressing journalists in Uzo-Uwani, Ogenyi said attention had shifted to the party’s national headquarters in Abuja following directives issued by the national leadership regarding the conduct of the primaries.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the National Chairman of the NDC, Senator Moses Cleopas, and the National Secretary, Barr. Ikenna Alex-Morgan Enekweizu, the party directed that no primary election results should be announced at the state level.

“The respective teams will collate and process all results and forward them to the National Headquarters where the National Working Committee will announce the results,” the statement said.

The party further stressed that no state executive or team had the authority to declare results and urged participants to conduct themselves peacefully.

“We call for understanding and urge all participants to conduct themselves responsibly, as the party has zero tolerance for violence, disorderly conduct and hooliganism,” the statement added.
