2027 election: Ebonyi group urges issue-based campaign

The Association of Ebonyi Indigenes Socio-Cultural in the Diaspora has called on political actors in Ebonyi State to focus on issues, leadership capacity and development plans ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The group made the call in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday while reacting to recent political activities in the state, including an endorsement rally organised in support of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s second-term bid and a separate press conference in Abakaliki.

The group President, Paschal Oluchukwu, said the developments reflected growing political engagement ahead of the 2027 polls and underscored the need for constructive discourse on the future of the state.

According to him, political leaders should continue to engage stakeholders across Ebonyi as discussions on the state’s future leadership gather momentum.

The group also expressed support for the position taken by the Umuekumenyi Leaders Council in supporting the PDP’s governorship aspiration for 2027 election.

“We align ourselves with the position of the Umuekumenyi Leaders Council and commend its members for their decision regarding the 2027 governorship election,” Oluchukwu said.

He stressed that the forthcoming election should be driven by discussions on governance, competence and policies capable of advancing the state’s development.

“2027 should be about who has the capacity and vision to advance the development of Ebonyi State and improve the welfare of its people,” he said.

Oluchukwu urged voters to critically evaluate candidates and their programmes before casting their ballots.

The diaspora group also encouraged members of the Ezza community and other stakeholders to remain actively involved in the political process through democratic means.

“Ezza people should continue to participate fully in the political process and seek leadership positions like every other group in the state,” he stated.

The group further called for peaceful political engagement and respect for democratic principles as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.

The group urged politicians, parties and supporters to avoid divisive rhetoric and embrace campaigns centred on ideas and solutions to the state’s challenges.

“We encourage all stakeholders to uphold democratic values, promote issue-based campaigns and ensure that the political atmosphere remains peaceful as the state prepares for the 2027 elections,” the statement added.

The association maintained that a focus on issues rather than personalities would strengthen democratic participation and contribute to the overall development of Ebonyi State.
