Kwame Nkrumah Circle, one of Ghana’s most critical commercial and transport intersections, has been completely overwhelmed by floodwaters following today’s torrential rainfall, with shops, transport stations, and businesses inundated and traders counting significant losses as commuters struggled to find safe passage.
Aerial video of the scene shows the full scale of the disaster, the iconic interchange and its elevated road network rising above a vast expanse of brown floodwater that has consumed the surrounding market areas, commercial properties, and transport terminals in every direction.
Vehicles can be seen gridlocked on the elevated sections of the interchange as the roads below them disappear entirely beneath the water.
The flooding has brought one of Accra’s most economically significant areas to a complete standstill, disrupting commerce, transport, and the livelihoods of the thousands of traders, hawkers, drivers, and commuters who depend on the Circle corridor daily.
Today’s flood disaster at Kwame Nkrumah Circle is part of a wider pattern of severe flooding recorded across Accra this morning, with separate incidents reported at Achimota Mile 7, where residents were stranded on rooftops, the Spintex to Polo Grounds road, where an Aayalolo bus was submerged and the University of Ghana’s Mensah Sarbah Hall, where student dormitory corridors were inundated.
