JUST IN: Terrorists attack school in Borno, kill teacher, abduct students

Gunmen suspected to be terrorists have attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, killing a teacher and abducting scores of students during a raid on the border community.
The attack occurred on Monday morning in the border community, which shares close ties with neighbouring Adamawa state.
Solomon Kwamagar, a resident of Lassa and special adviser to the governor of Adamawa state on media and strategy, confirmed the incident, saying the assailants rode into the community on motorcycles before invading the school.
According to him, the attackers arrived on the community’s market day, passed through the market and launched the assault on the school while students were in their classrooms.
Kwamagar said one teacher was shot dead during the attack, while the gunmen abducted an unspecified number of students.
“I was informed that they came through the market on motorcycles and went to Government Day Secondary School, Lassa. They shot and killed one teacher and took away all the students who were in their classrooms,” he said.
He noted that efforts were ongoing to determine the exact number of students and staff taken away during the attack.
Kwamagar explained that Lassa, although located in Borno state, is predominantly inhabited by the Margi ethnic group, whose population also extends into parts of neighbouring Adamawa state.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Attempts to obtain confirmation from the Adamawa State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the command’s spokesperson could not be reached.
