Aftermath of Gunshot, Attack: T.A Gardens Estate Developer speaks, blames residents

In the aftermath of the shooting and public backlash, Vitalvox Nigeria Limited, developer of T.A. Gardens estate has issued statements blaming the residents for the chaos, alleging that the aggressive nature of the confrontation initiated by the disgruntled homeowner disrupted the estate’s operations and threatened facility staff.

It accused the T.A Gardens Residents’ Association of unlawfully taking over the estate’s power management, mismanaging the infrastructure and overseeing a collapse in electricity supply that has now snowballed into a violent dispute.

The company said it managed the estate’s power infrastructure from 2019 to March 1, 2026, including through the COVID-19 period, with negligible downtime and steady supply to residents through its designated facility manager.

According to Vitalvox, the Residents’ Association formally took over management of the estate’s power through a letter dated June 4, 2026, despite being fully aware of the estate’s operational structure.

It alleged that before the takeover, the association unilaterally opened a new bank account and directed residents to stop making payments into T.A. Gardens’ approved operational account.

Vitalvox said it made a good-faith intervention on June 18, 2026, by offering to supply diesel immediately to stabilise the failing power supply and give residents a two-week window to pay a N50,000 diesel deposit, but claimed the association’s Executive Committee rejected the proposal at a meeting.

The company added that at the estate’s town hall meeting on June 20, 2026, the association informed residents that it had taken over management of the power infrastructure with effect from June 4 and was responsible for all collections.

Vitalvox blamed the association’s leadership for what it described as the total collapse of the estate’s power infrastructure, arguing that the group had no prior experience in large-scale facility management.

The developer further claimed that after the failure of the power system, the association moved to cover up the breakdown by announcing a purported arrangement with an Independent Power Producer.

It said the arrangement would require either residents or the developer to make an upfront capital investment of N40 million, but alleged that no documentation, agreement or details of the engagement had been made available to residents.

The dispute took a fresh turn on June 24, 2026, when Vitalvox alleged that a group of residents forcefully held its Managing Director hostage within the estate for several hours and prevented him from leaving until he restored electricity supply, despite the association’s earlier takeover of the infrastructure.

The company said a local vigilante group, engaged to patrol the surrounding area and protect the community from intruders, armed robbers and kidnappers, later mobilised into the estate after learning of the incident and rescued the Managing Director. Vitalvox said the intervention triggered a confrontation at the estate gate.

It also alleged that during the standoff, the orderly of a Lebanese resident opened fire after being ordered to do so by the resident, adding that the incident had been widely circulated on social media.

The company further alleged that the same resident returned early on Thursday and inflicted serious bodily injuries on one of its engineers on site.

Vitalvox maintained that the Residents’ Association had already assumed control of the estate’s power operations before the latest crisis and should bear responsibility for the consequences of the failed electricity management.
