Bizwoman sues ex-co-wife over alleged death threats

A businesswoman, Rumaisa’u Yunusa on Thursday, dragged her former co-wife, Maryam Sulaiman, to a Shari’a court sitting at Magajin Gari, in Kaduna, over an alleged death threats.

Yunusa told the court that Sulaiman made the threat during a telephone conversation.

“Since the court granted my former husband custody of my two children, I haven’t seen them.

”When I visited them in school; they complained that they were hungry so I bought them food to eat.

“When my former co-wife heard about this, she called me on the phone and told me that that will be the last time I will see my children.

”She threatened to  kill them,” Yunusa alleged.

Sulaiman denied the allegations.

The Judge, Malam  Yakubu Abdullahi, had asked the complainant if she had witnesses to the allegations.

Yunusa said her children were her witnesses.

However, counsel to the defendant, A.M Hassan, disagreed with the complainant’s prayers to present her children as witnesses, saying they were minors and were not fit to serve as witnesses for their mother.

The judge didn’t accept the defendant’s counsel’s plea and ordered them to present the children in court on the adjourned date.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the complainant was present in court with the two children, aged six and seven on Thursday, but the defendant and her counsel were absent.

She told the court that the children were brought to her a few days ago, with marks on their body that suggested that they had been beaten.

She told the court that she would want the case to be on hold since the children were now with her, adding that she had filed a new case at an upper Shari’a court, seeking custody.

The judge ruled that the case would be put on hold, pending the complainant’s readiness  to continue with the case, should there be any development. (NAN)
