Ekiti 2026: SDP gov candidate demands issue-based campaigns

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in the forthcoming Ekiti State governorship election, Peter Obafemi, has called on political parties and candidates to focus their campaigns on policies and practical solutions to the challenges facing residents of the state.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Obafemi said his engagements with residents across Ekiti revealed growing concerns over unemployment, poverty, food insecurity, infrastructure deficits, healthcare, education and security.

According to him, discussions with community leaders, farmers, traders, civil servants, students, artisans and professionals showed that many residents were more interested in solutions to economic and social challenges than political rhetoric.

“As Ekiti State prepares for the June 20, 2026, governorship election, it is important that public discourse remains focused on the issues that directly affect the lives and livelihoods of our people”, the statement partly read.

Obafemi identified youth unemployment and the migration of skilled professionals from the state as major concerns, noting that while Ekiti continues to produce educated graduates and talented individuals, limited industrial growth and employment opportunities have forced many young people to seek opportunities elsewhere.

“Ekiti continues to produce highly educated graduates and talented individuals, yet the absence of sufficient industries and large-scale employers has limited opportunities for gainful employment,” he said.

He stressed the need for deliberate investments in economic development, adding that government policies should encourage entrepreneurship, innovation and private-sector participation.

“The state must create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, encourage entrepreneurship, support innovation, and attract investments capable of generating employment opportunities,” Obafemi said.

He added that agriculture, technology, manufacturing, tourism and small and medium-scale enterprises should be prioritised as key drivers of economic growth.

The SDP candidate also expressed concern over poverty and food insecurity, despite the state’s agricultural potential.

“There is a need for greater investment in modern agricultural practices, access to credit for farmers, improved storage facilities, value addition, and better market access.

“Strengthening the agricultural value chain will not only improve food security but also create jobs and stimulate rural development,” he said.

Obafemi further advocated measures to reduce the state’s dependence on federal allocations, arguing that a stronger local economy and expanded revenue base were essential for sustainable development.

“Sustainable development requires a stronger local economy and a broader revenue base,” he stated.

On infrastructure, he acknowledged progress in road construction and rehabilitation but said many rural and intra-community roads still required attention.

“Improving transportation networks will enhance the movement of agricultural produce, facilitate commerce, and strengthen connectivity between communities,” he said.

The governorship hopeful also highlighted challenges relating to access to potable water and sanitation, calling for innovative solutions to improve water supply and public health across the state.

He said security remained critical to economic growth and social stability, urging stronger collaboration among security agencies, local communities, traditional institutions and other stakeholders.

“The safety of lives and property remains a prerequisite for economic growth and social stability,” he noted.

Obafemi equally called for renewed investment in healthcare, particularly in rural communities where access to quality medical services remains limited.

“Strengthening primary healthcare centres, improving medical infrastructure, and expanding access to preventive healthcare will contribute significantly to the well-being of residents,” he said.

On education, Obafemi urged stakeholders to preserve Ekiti’s reputation as the “Fountain of Knowledge” through improved infrastructure, teacher development and policies aimed at reducing school dropouts.

“The state has earned a reputation as the Fountain of Knowledge, but current realities call for renewed investment in educational infrastructure, teacher development, student support systems, and policies aimed at reducing school dropouts and improving learning outcomes,” he said.

Obafemi also urged political actors to elevate the quality of public debate ahead of the election.

“I believe it is important for candidates, political parties, and stakeholders to engage citizens on substantive policy issues and practical solutions. Elections should provide an opportunity to discuss ideas, evaluate plans, and consider the future direction of our state,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the state could overcome its challenges through effective leadership and prudent management of resources.

“The challenges facing Ekiti are significant, but they are not insurmountable. With responsible leadership, strategic planning, prudent management of resources, and the collective efforts of all stakeholders, the state can achieve sustainable economic growth, improved social welfare, and greater opportunities for its people,” Obafemi added.
