FIFA extends South Africa’s Themba Zwaneâs World Cup ban

South Africa midfielder Themba Zwane has been handed a three-match suspension by FIFA following his red card in Bafana Bafana’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Mexico.
.....
Zwane was sent off late in South Africa’s 2-0 defeat after officials ruled that he struck Mexico defender Roberto Alvarado in the face during the encounter.
While red cards typically carry an automatic one-match suspension, FIFA’s disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and decided to impose a harsher punishment. As a result, the 36-year-old midfielder will miss South Africa’s remaining Group A matches, including a crucial clash against the Czech Republic.

FIFA noted that red cards normally result in a one-match ban, but disciplinary reviews can lead to additional sanctions depending on the severity of the offence. However, South Africa could still seek to overturn or reduce the suspension through a successful appeal.
