June 12 a reminder of our collective journey – Group

The Renewed Hope Youth Alliance, a pro-Tinubu support group, has called on Nigerians to embrace unity, peace, and democratic values as the nation commemorates the June 12 Democracy Day celebration.

In a statement issued on Friday by its National Coordinator, Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, the group described June 12 as a landmark in Nigeria’s democratic history and a reminder of the country’s commitment to freedom, justice, and the rule of law.

“June 12 serves as a reminder of our collective journey towards a democratic society, one that embodies the principles of freedom, justice, and the rule of law,” the statement read.

According to the group, democracy remains the foundation for building a prosperous and equitable nation, stressing the need for citizens to remain committed to its ideals.

RHYA emphasised the importance of national unity and peaceful coexistence, urging Nigerians to work together despite ethnic, religious, and political differences.

“Our strength as a nation lies in our unity and commitment to peace. As we navigate the complexities of our diverse society, we must embrace our differences and work together towards a common goal: a Nigeria that is secure, thriving, and inclusive for all its citizens,” it stated.

The group also commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for what he described as efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and encourage civic participation.

“His leadership has been marked by a commitment to transparency, accountability, and the empowerment of our youth.

“The initiatives launched under his administration have fostered an environment conducive to civic engagement and participation, reminding us that democracy thrives when every voice is heard and valued.”
While acknowledging the country’s democratic gains, the RHYA coordinator urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to address insecurity and economic challenges confronting Nigerians.

“The safety and security of our citizens must remain a top priority,” Awoyinfa said. “We urge the administration to intensify its efforts in addressing these critical issues and to adopt innovative strategies that will combat threats to peace and stability,” the statement added.

The group further called for economic policies aimed at creating jobs, stimulating growth, and improving the welfare of citizens.

“We encourage the administration to prioritize economic reforms that will create jobs, stimulate growth, and enhance the quality of life for all Nigerians,” the statement added.

Addressing Nigerians directly, the group urged citizens to remain law-abiding and actively contribute to national development.

“We charge all Nigerians to uphold the values of democracy and engage in constructive dialogue that promotes unity and peace.

“Each of us has a role to play in shaping the future of Nigeria, and together, we can create a society that reflects our shared values and aspirations,” the statement added.

The group called on Nigerians to use the Democracy Day celebration as an opportunity to renew their commitment to democracy, peace, and national unity.

“As we commemorate this important day, let us renew our commitment to democracy, unity, and peace. Together, we can build a Nigeria that we are proud to pass on to future generations,” it said.

June 12 is observed annually as Nigeria’s Democracy Day in honour of the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in the country’s history. The election, believed to have been won by the late Chief MKO Abiola, was annulled by the military government, triggering widespread protests and intensifying demands for democratic rule.

The date was officially adopted as Democracy Day in 2018 in recognition of the significance of the June 12 struggle and the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists who fought for the restoration of civil rule.

President Tinubu was among the prominent figures involved in the pro-democracy movement during the military era, and his administration has consistently highlighted June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic evolution and a reminder of the need to strengthen democratic institutions.
