Kidnap victims regain freedom hours after Igboho’s ultimatum in Oyo

Residents of Igboho in Oorelope Local Government Area of Oyo State have celebrated the release of a family that was abducted by suspected kidnappers, following a strong intervention by Sunday Adeyemo, Yoruba nation activist popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

The victims, who reportedly included a pregnant woman, her children and another family member, regained their freedom after spending several days in captivity.

Their release triggered scenes of jubilation across the town, with residents taking to the streets to welcome them home amid singing, dancing and expressions of relief.

The family was said to have been kidnapped during a late-night attack on their residence by armed men who initially demanded a ransom of N300 million. Reports indicated that the demand was later reduced to N150 million during negotiations.

The incident generated outrage within the community, especially following allegations that a pregnant woman and a ransom courier were killed during efforts to secure the victims’ release.

Reacting to the development, Igboho condemned the rising wave of kidnappings in the area and accused criminal elements of turning the community into a haven for abductions.

Speaking during a meeting with community stakeholders and Fulani leaders, the activist expressed frustration over what he described as persistent attacks on residents and warned that such incidents would no longer be tolerated.

He subsequently issued a two-hour deadline for the release of the remaining captives, insisting that the community must not be subjected to further intimidation by criminal gangs.

The ultimatum heightened tension across the area, with residents anxiously awaiting developments.

Hours later, reports emerged that the abducted family members had been released, prompting widespread celebrations among community members who viewed the outcome as a major relief.

The development has once again drawn attention to growing insecurity in parts of Oyo state, with residents calling for stronger security measures to curb kidnapping and other violent crimes in rural communities.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the victims’ release.
