Lagos cracks down on Alaba Rago traders, issues 72-hr quit notice

Lagos state authorities have issued a 72-hour ultimatum to traders and other unauthorised occupants operating along the Alaba Rago section of the Mile 2–Badagry expressway.

The Lagos state taskforce announced that the planned exercise is part of efforts to restore order and enforce environmental regulations prohibiting street trading and illegal occupation of public spaces across the state.

According to a statement released by Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the agency’s spokesperson, the operation will be carried out in collaboration with other relevant enforcement bodies and will focus on removing illegal commercial activities obstructing highways, walkways, road medians and other restricted areas.

The agency expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the Alaba Rago corridor, describing it as a major gateway into Lagos that has become increasingly affected by environmental abuse, security concerns and traffic disruptions.

Authorities said structures earmarked for removal include makeshift stalls, illegal buildings, shanties, mini brothels, plastic recycling dumps and unauthorised refuse disposal points.

Speaking during a sensitisation campaign in the area, CSP Adetayo Akerele, chairman of the Lagos state taskforce urged affected individuals to comply with the directive and relocate voluntarily before the expiration of the notice.

He noted that the Alaba Rago axis, situated along the strategic Lagos-Badagry expressway corridor, plays a critical role in transportation and regional commerce and should not be allowed to remain a hub for unlawful activities.

Akerele stated that the government had previously engaged stakeholders through consultations and public awareness campaigns before deciding to commence enforcement.

He warned that any trader or occupant found violating the directive after the deadline would face strict sanctions, including seizure of goods and possible legal action.

The taskforce chairman reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Government to maintaining environmental cleanliness, public safety and urban order as part of its broader development agenda.
