Students of Navrongo Senior High School in the Upper East Region have reportedly vandalised a newly constructed school fence, tearing down significant sections of the structure in protest against what they say is a restriction on their freedom to leave the campus.
Video of the aftermath shows extensive sections of the concrete fence wall completely demolished, with broken blocks, exposed reinforcement bars, and collapsed wooden supports scattered along the length of what was previously an enclosed boundary, with residential buildings visible beyond the school’s perimeter.
According to reports, students targeted the fence specifically because its construction was seen as an attempt to tighten control over their movement in and out of the school premises, a restriction that has reportedly generated significant resentment among the student body.
The destruction of newly built infrastructure represents a substantial financial loss for the school, and the incident raises serious questions about disciplinary boundaries, student welfare policy, and the appropriate balance between campus security and student autonomy within Ghana’s senior high school system.
The Ghana Education Service and the school’s management had not issued an official statement on the incident, the scale of the damage, or any disciplinary action being considered against students involved, as of press time.
It remains unclear whether any students have been identified, suspended, or otherwise sanctioned in connection with the vandalism, or whether the matter has been reported to the Ghana Police Service.
