NSIB launches probe, safety assessment after Benue boat accident claims 11

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has officially launched a comprehensive investigation and an on-the-spot safety assessment following a tragic boat accident on the River Benue that claimed 11 lives.

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., personally led a team of specialized investigators and senior bureau officials to Wadata, Benue State.

The visit aims to uncover the direct and underlying causes of the accident, gather critical evidence, engage with local stakeholders, and formulate actionable safety recommendations to curb the recurring loss of lives on Nigeria’s inland waterways.

Upon arrival in Makurdi, the NSIB delegation was received by the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Dr. Barr. Samuel Ode, who welcomed the team on behalf of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The delegation later met with the governor after commencing investigative activities and activating family assistance protocols for victims and affected families.

A statement signed by Mrs Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe Director, Public Affairs and Family Assistance, NSIB, confirmed the development.

It said Governor Alia commended the Bureau for its swift response and called for a stronger NSIB presence in the state to support safety advocacy and risk reduction efforts along the River Benue.

The governor also stressed the need for improved public awareness, stronger operational safety standards and increased stakeholder engagement to enhance safety on the state’s waterways.

Responding, Capt. Badeh reaffirmed the NSIB’s commitment to collaborating with state governments, communities, operators and regulators to promote safer transportation systems.

“The NSIB welcomes every opportunity to collaborate with state governments, local communities, operators, and regulators in advancing transport safety.

“We remain committed to exploring practical avenues for institutionalising safer navigation on the River Benue and across Nigeria’s inland waterways,” he said.

Speaking during a media briefing, Badeh expressed condolences to the government and people of Benue State, especially families of victims of the accident.

He described the incident as a reminder of the need for increased safety awareness, responsible operations and stronger compliance with safety measures on Nigeria’s waterways.

“Our thoughts are with the families and communities affected by this unfortunate accident. Every loss of life is one too many,” he said.

The NSIB team later visited Wadata along the River Benue, where investigators engaged community leaders, residents, boat operators and representatives of the Boat Operators Association.

The engagement provided investigators with information on the accident, local water transport operations, safety practices and challenges faced by operators and passengers.

The Bureau said findings from the visit would support its investigation and guide future safety recommendations aimed at improving safety culture across Nigeria’s inland waterways.

The NSIB added that it remains committed to preventing future accidents through independent investigations, safety advocacy and recommendations to protect lives across the country’s transport systems.
