Ogoni monarch reacts to alleged links to criminal gangs, threatens legal action

The traditional ruler of Bangha Kingdom in Ogoniland, King Suanu Timothy Baridam, has strongly denied allegations linking him to criminal gangs and has issued a seven-day ultimatum to his accusers to retract their statements or face legal action.

The monarch, who serves as the Chairman of the Khana Traditional Rulers Council in Rivers State, expressed deep concern over deliberate attempts to tarnish his reputation.

King Baridam gave the reaction in a statement issued on Monday by his media consultant, Dr. Domene Mea.

He was reacting to allegations reportedly made by some youth leaders who accused him of sponsoring criminal activities in Khana Local Government Area.

The monarch described the allegations as “reckless, malicious and unfounded,” insisting that he has no relationship with any criminal gang, cult group or individuals involved in unlawful activities.

According to the statement, King Baridam has consistently promoted peace, security and community development across Bangha Kingdom, Nyokana District, Khana Local Government Area and Ogoniland.

The statement further noted that, as Chairman of the Khana Traditional Rulers Council, King Baridam has worked with government authorities, security agencies, community leaders and other stakeholders to foster peace, stability and development in the region.

The monarch expressed concern over what he described as attempts to damage his reputation, maintaining that his record reflects a commitment to the welfare and progress of his people.

He subsequently issued a seven-day ultimatum to two youth leaders, Felix Giadom and Felix Poroma, demanding a retraction of the allegations and a public apology through selected media outlets.

The statement said that failure to comply within the stipulated period could lead to legal action.

King Baridam also reassured residents of Bangha Kingdom and the wider Ogoni community of his commitment to peace, unity, security and sustainable development, urging the public to disregard the allegations.
