Laolu Akande, former media aide to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has openly criticised President Bola Tinubu over the calibre of individuals he has chosen to surround himself with in government, arguing that the president is being ill-served by those closest to him.
Speaking during a television interview on a breakfast programme, Akande expressed concern that Tinubu is not receiving the quality of counsel he needs, attributing this to what he described as a pattern of surrounding himself with low-quality advisers who are not up to the demands of their roles.
He was blunt in his assessment, stating that the individuals around the president fall well below the standard required to offer sound, strategic guidance at the highest level of government.
Akande made clear that his primary concern is not about political point-scoring or the behaviour of opposition figures, but about accountability and the rule of law.
He stressed that wherever a crime has been committed, punishment must follow and that this is precisely why the president bears the title of Commander-in-Chief.
In his view, that title carries a weight of responsibility that demands decisive action, and there should be no individual or group that the president cannot confront in the interest of national security.
He concluded by acknowledging that Tinubu has the governance experience and pedigree to do better, and issued a direct appeal to the president to rise to the occasion and take full ownership of the responsibilities that come with his office.
