Oyo threatens arrest of troublemakers during masquerader festival

The Oyo State Government has warned individuals and groups against road obstruction, thuggery and any act capable of disrupting public peace during the 2026 Egungun Festival in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Wasiu Olatubosun, conveyed this in a statement issued on Monday in Ibadan, stressing that the government remains committed to maintaining law and order throughout the festival period.
“Reports indicate that some persons have been taking advantage of the festival to block roads and hinder the free movement of residents and motorists,” the commissioner said, describing such actions as unlawful and unacceptable.
Olatubosun urged all participants and stakeholders to celebrate responsibly, noting that while citizens have the right to observe their cultural and religious festivals, such celebrations must not infringe on others’ rights or constitute a public nuisance.
The commissioner reiterated the government’s warning against possessing, displaying, or using weapons and other dangerous objects during the festival, stating that anyone found engaging in activities that threaten public safety would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Additionally, he called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to ensure strict enforcement of law and order and to take appropriate action against offenders.
While wishing all Egungun worshippers a peaceful and successful celebration, Olatubosun reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, emphasising that violence, thuggery, vendetta and any conduct capable of disturbing public peace would not be tolerated.
