Reps Adjourn Until July After Passing State Police Bill

The House of Representatives has adjourned plenary until July 7, 2026.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas made the announcement on Thursday, saying the adjournment marks the end of the legislative year and allows lawmakers to review other constitutional amendment proposals, which he noted would be the first item on the agenda when they reconvene.

Abbas added that the recess would also afford lawmakers the opportunity to return to their constituencies and interact with their constituents.

Before the adjournment, the House passed the State Police Bill following a decisive vote during plenary, with 289 lawmakers voting in favour of the proposal.

The session was not without drama, however, as Kaduna lawmaker Bashir Zubairu raised a point of order shortly after proceedings began, complaining that the document on the proposed state police put together by the House Committee on Constitution Review was only made available to lawmakers on Thursday afternoon.

“Mr Speaker, this document was only made available to lawmakers in the chambers, and we are yet to go through it. We cannot do justice to it because we have not gone through it,” Zubairu said.
