Resign like UK Starmer for Nigeria to move forward, Peter Obi tells Tinubu

Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, saying it is time for Nigeria to embrace accountability in leadership to move the country forward.

In a statement shared on his X account on Monday, Obi pointed to the recent resignation announcement by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, arguing that the issues that pushed Starmer to step aside are similar to the challenges Nigerians face today.

According to Obi, Starmer decided to leave office amid growing public anger over a weak economy, rising living costs, and unfulfilled campaign promises. He said Nigerians are facing the same problems under Tinubu’s administration, along with worsening insecurity.

Obi recalled that before becoming president, Tinubu repeatedly urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to resign over insecurity and economic difficulties. He noted that Tinubu had also promised better electricity supply, improved welfare, and stronger action against corruption during the 2023 election campaign.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate said those promises have not been fulfilled. He argued that power supply remains poor, kidnappings and insecurity have increased, and economic hardship has become more severe.

Obi maintained that conditions across key sectors, including security, infrastructure, transportation, and anti corruption efforts, have continued to decline.

He said the president should step down over what he described as a major failure in governance, adding that such a move would promote responsibility, accountability, and a better political culture in Nigeria.

Obi stressed that public office should be seen as a trust given by the people and not an entitlement. He added that leaders must be held responsible for their actions if Nigeria is to achieve a better future.
