Seven key changes to know about NYSC’s first major reform

President Bola Tinubu has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first major overhaul of the scheme in decades.

Under the new framework, the NYSC will be led operationally by a civilian, while the military will continue to provide security support for corps members across the country.

The President also directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Minister of Youth, Ayodele Olawande, to amend the NYSC Act and its regulations to reflect the approved reforms and facilitate their immediate implementation.

1. Technology-driven call-up process:

A fully digital call-up system designed to improve efficiency, transparency, and service delivery.

2. Risk-sensitive deployment:

Corps members will be deployed based on security assessments to enhance their safety during service.

3. Redesigned orientation programme:

The six-week orientation camp will place greater emphasis on leadership development, entrepreneurship, digital skills, and specialised career pathways.

4. Skills-based primary assignments:

Corps members will be posted to organisations that align more closely with their academic qualifications and career aspirations.

5. Civilian operational leadership:

The NYSC’s day-to-day operations will be managed by civilians, while the military will retain responsibility for providing security support.

6. Improved camp standards:

A national grading and certification system will be introduced to improve the quality of orientation camps nationwide.

7. New graduation ceremony and uniform:

The traditional Passing Out Parade will be replaced with a graduation ceremony, while corps members will receive a redesigned NYSC uniform intended to reflect professionalism and national pride.

The reforms are expected to modernise the NYSC scheme, improve corps members’ safety and employability, and better align the programme with Nigeria’s evolving socio-economic needs.
