South Africa Make History With Stunning World Cup Knockout Qualification

South Africa have made history by reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time, defeating South Korea 1-0 in a decisive Group A fixture in Monterrey on Wednesday.

The result represents a remarkable recovery for Bafana Bafana, who had begun the tournament on the back foot following a 2-0 opening loss to group winners Mexico.

A disciplined draw against the Czech Republic kept their qualification hopes alive heading into the final group matchday.

The only goal of the game arrived in the 63rd minute, when Thapelo Maseko converted from close range after Tshepang Moremi delivered an accurate cross into the penalty area.

Maseko held his composure to finish inside the near post, a strike that proved decisive.

South Korea had raised eyebrows before kickoff when coach Hong Myung-bo opted to drop captain Son Heung-min from the starting line-up.

The talismanic forward was introduced at the start of the second half as the Koreans sought to turn the tide, but South Africa responded with renewed intensity.

Their finishing, however, let them down at crucial moments Evidence Makgopa spurning the best chance of the first half in the 30th minute, with his tame effort from inside the box comfortably stopped by goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu.

Tension mounted as news emerged that Mexico were leading the Czech Republic in the parallel group fixture. South Korea pushed late through Oh Hyeon-gyu, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams stood firm to preserve the lead.

The win sends South Africa into the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on June 28. Mexico topped Group A with a perfect nine points.
